Importance of Physical Play in Early Years

Play is an integral part of a child's early development. It is essential to recognise the crucial role that play has in early childhood development, as it fulfils a wide variety of purposes in the child's life. From the moment a baby is born, play begins to shape a child's physical, social, emotional, cognitive and creative development. As children grow and learn, play becomes an increasingly important part of their lives.

Physical play is one of the essential aspects of play for young children. This type of play includes activities that use physical movements to allow children to use their energy and develop gross and finer motor skills. It also allows children to learn new things and socialise. Physical play also promotes the development of sensorimotor skills, which includes activities that stimulate a young child’s senses like touch, smell, taste, movement, balance, sight and hearing.

Research has shown that physical play provides various health benefits, including decreasing the risk of developing health conditions like coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and many other chronic conditions. Physical play mainly occurs outside and provides children with the opportunity to release their energies using physical activities and loud voices. Outdoor free-plays also allow children to explore their environment and investigate the natural surroundings around them. Children with disabilities must also be provided opportunities to play outside in nature and appreciate the many blessings of nature.

As parents and caregivers, it's essential to recognize the importance of physical play in a child's life and to encourage play in all its forms. We must provide children with the opportunities and resources they need to explore, learn, and grow through play. By doing so, we can help children develop into well-rounded, confident, and capable individuals who are equipped to thrive in the world around them.
